Senators trade rights to Meszaros to Tampa Bay
Quote:
The Ottawa Senators finally resolved their contract dispute with defenceman Andrej Meszaros on Friday, trading the restricted free agent to the ever-changing Tampa Bay Lightning.
In exchange, the Senators received defencemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard and a first round pick the Lightning previously acquired from the San Jose Sharks. Sources add that Meszaros is expected to sign a six-year contract with the Lightning averaging $4 million a season.

Senators trade Meszaros to Tampa Bay
Now Tampa has to get him under contract.
I love watching the Sens fail.

Tampa looks good this year, save for defence, but this will help.

Wow, not a bad deal for the Senators, their defense didn't get any better though but picking up Picard and a 1st is a good job and Tampa...well who the fuck knows how Tampa is going to react to such a massive change to their line-up not to mention a new coach as well as a new ownership group.
Meszaros is still getting over paid but by only 1m on average, which is better than the 5m that TC posted from THN.

Great deal for Ottawa, as much as I hate Ottawa, they win this deal. Mez is a young and steady D, but I don't know if he was worth that much, but we'll see.
and i think the Offer is 4.5-5mil over 5 years as reported earlier.

I bet Murray isn't happy, but that's the way it is. At least he got some assets back for him. Kuba isn't an upgrade on Meszaros but he'll help a bit.

Kuba is not even close to the player Mez is.
As of 2008/09 season Ottawa wins this deal. BUT (big BUT) if Mez can turn into the D we all know he can be (maybe top 5-10 in points, +/-, and 25+ mins a game for 82 games a season for the next 10-15 years than Tampa wins, and i think Tampa might win this deal in the long run)

Actually, they are saying 6yrs at 4m/yr averaged. Tampa Bay still has 3m in cap space after that deal is signed...holy shit. They have like what, 17 forwards and they finally added some offensive punch (although not that great) on the blueline, but still lack a veteran presence. But addng Carle and now Meszaros is a pretty amazing feat nonetheless.
So tell me guys, is Meszaros overrated or is he for real, a top 4 defenseman?

Picard is on his 3rd team and he isn't an NHL regular yet...i don't know if that's a good or bad thing. Kuba is vastly overrated as is Meszaros. The only reason the Senators win this is because of the numbers game, they simply got more for less.
Can Mesz become this top 4 defenseman? Sure, he has a great chance on the Bolts where he is their #3 defenseman behind Ranger (i rank it Carle, Ranger, Meszaros...a weak ass defense mind you with no depth).
If Picard develops into a solid defenseman and the Senators draft a player that is NHL bound with that 1st pick, then they win this in the long run. Tampa is some fucked up collage of shit thrown at a wall and hoping it all sticks long enough to resemble something.

WTF.
My mouth was open when I read what the Lightning gave up to get him, what a terrible trade.
Filip Kuba is just as good as Andrej Mezsaros IMO, Picard is a fringe NHLer (for now, he could improve) who will provide the Sens with depth, and a freicking 1st rounder TOO on top of that ludicrous 6-year deal Tampa gave him?
Nice going Bryan Murray.

I don't see how this helps Ottawa in the short-term, and Ottawa should be a team that is trying to win right now and not trying to rebuild yet.
Kuba isn't as good as Meszaros (though both aren't very good right now) and they take on his salary. Picard is a prospect who has proven nothing, and the 1st round pick is many years away and a late 1st anyways, as SJ is an awesome team.
Ottawa has two defensemen locked up to absolutely incredible deals, and the rest of the blueline is either unproven or just plain awful. Are you telling me that your second pairing is Kuba-Brian Lee? Are you serious? You expect to win in the playoffs with that? Teams like Montreal, Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Pittsburgh are going to FEAST on that defense...and the goalies behind that shoddy defense don't exactly inspire confidence either.
One injury to Phillips or Volchenkov and the Senators are FUCKED. I don't like that defense at all, especially with an incredibly uncertain goaltending situation behind them. I think Ottawa makes the playoffs, but they'll get bounced in the first round. They're a one line team...both on offense and defense. Gerber will have to be Vezina caliber for that team to win in the playoffs.
As for Tampa, they're gambling that Meszaros regains that promise he had as a rookie. My bet is if he plays with Paul Ranger (if Ranger played in Canada he'd be fellated to no end, he's a damn good player) that he'll recover. Tampa is going to challenge for the playoffs this season, but they won't get far if they get there, their defense and goaltending is nothing special either, although their forward depth is way better than Ottawa's. Tampa's going for it, and although I think they've locked themselves into some questionable contracts, they'll at least be a playoff contender this year.

Filip Kuba
Jason Smith
Brian Lee
Alex Picard
I think Ottawa's D has the potential to surprise. I wouldn't call Kuba or Smith awful. Smith was solid in a reduced role last playoffs, and Kuba had comparable numbers to Tampa Bay's best kept secret. The potential is there in Lee, and to a lesser extent Picard. Hopefully Hartsburg can work some magic with the young ones.
It's not going to matter all that much though because nothing short of Detroit and Anaheim's combined defence would lead a team with Martin Gerber as their starter anywhere...
